soup asked:

My cat got out of my apartment and got into my neighbors apartment. When he tried to capture my cat, my cat bit him. He went to the emergency room several hours later and was told he has an infection. I don’t have renters insurance, but he does……. What am I liable for? I’m not apposed to paying for some of it, but if he has to be hospitalized… I have NO MONEY?!!! help!!!!

All of the medical bills. How can you be opposed to paying any of it? Your cat got out and bit this person. Your responsibility as a pet owner is to control and contain your animal at all times.

    Yes, you are liable.

Doesn’t matter if he had insurance or not.

You are responsible for keeping your cat from causing harm.

depends how nice the neighbor is. Most ones will excuse it but he might have to pay the doctors bills

Talk calmly with him saying how sorry you are, and that the cat was supposed to be in your apartment. Let him know you’re concerned about what happened, that you’re living on a tight budget and are willing to help try to cover the bills, but that you’ve got very little right not to do so with.

Just talking about it will get you points on this. Being reasonable and truthful, that’s important. He has the option of saying don’t worry about it. You need to not ignore the problem or try to hide from it. Just offering is sometimes enough and the person will feel better about you and say you don’t need to do anything.

I suspect that you are liable, but I would call your local legal aid office and ask them on the best course of action- To qualify, you usually have to be considered low income. Just google the words “Legal Aid, and your state” Or “Low Income Legal Help your State”

    Hard to say.
The cat probably panicked when he (a stranger) approached it. It would have been distressed being in unfamiliar territory with unfamiliar smells.
He should have left in there and come and got u to retrieve it. Maybe u could base ur case around this.

Ugh, that guy sounds like a real jerk. What kind of loser doesn’t have medical insurance? It sounds like he just wants to F*CK with u. Did he show u the bill.

Call the ASPCA and tell them that this guy tried to molest your poor kitty.

This jerk just prolly hates cats. Make him pay for being a hater!!!

Yes, you are liable, even if he did have medical insurance. I can tell you that cat bites are very serious, and in many cases require hospitalization with IV antibiotics, so he’s not just making it up. His renters insurance won’t cover it - that’s for his possessions. What you needed was renter’s insurance with liability. He’s going to need his ER bills paid, and his prescriptions paid for. And let’s hope that your cat is current on his rabies vaccine … Time to contact your local legal aid to see what you can do. If it would end up in court I’m afraid you’d lose - it was your cat, and it was in his apartment, and it bit him. Not much to argue about there, sorry.

It would be nice if he went through whatever insurance he has first or even charity care first BUT you are most definitely responsible. Hope everyone feels better soon.
