My daughter has eczma. It can be brought on with contact with cats. But only certain cats.
Why? was the question we put to the consultant.
The answer he gave follows:
Cats have a protein in their saliva that gets transferred to their hair when they clean themselves. The amount of protein levels vary cat to cat. And, it is this protein that you are allergic to.
That is why you may notice no effects when cuddling certain cats but come out in eczma when only in the room with others. Presumably because their hair gets onto furniture.
